Director Ted Huffman was recently nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production and for an RPS Music Award in Opera for 4.48 Psychosis at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He is the also recipient of a 2017 MacDowell Fellowship with composer Philip Venables.

Ted Huffman is best known for his work in new opera, which has received several awards. The world premiere production of Venables’ 4.48 Psychosis, based on Sarah Kane’s last play, for the Royal Opera House, won the 2016 UK Theatre Award for Achievement in Opera. His production of Peter Maxwell-Davies’ The Lighthouse for English Touring Opera was nominated for an RPS Music Prize for Opera in 2012 and won the WhatsOnStage Award for Opera. Henze’s El Cimarron for the Greenwich Music Festival, with Co-Director Zack Winokur, was nominated for “Best Direction” in the German magazine Opernwelt. Ted also recently directed the world premieres of Arthur Lavandier’s Le premier meurtre for the Opéra de Lille, the world premiere of Luke Styles’ Macbeth (Glyndebourne, Royal Opera House) and the European premiere of Ana Sokolovic’s Svádba, with Zack Winokur (Festival Aix-en-Provence, Opéra Angers-Nantes, Les Théâtres de la ville de Luxembourg).

Other past productions include Poulenc’s Les mamelles de Tirésias (La Monnaie, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Dutch National Opera, Juilliard Opera, Aldeburgh Festival), Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis (Central City Opera, Juilliard Opera, Greenwich Music Festival), Philip Glass’ Hydrogen Jukebox (Skylight Music Theater) and Eugene Onegin (Theater an der Wien in der Kammeroper). Ted has also created concert stagings of Die Dreigroschenoper with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Vladimir Jurowski and La cambiale di matrimonio with the Philharmonia Baroque and Nicholas McGegan.

In 2017-18, he gives house debuts in Rinaldo at Oper Frankfurt and in Madama Butterfly at Opernhaus Zürich, and will return to the ROH Covent Garden to revive his production of 4.48 Psychosis and to Dutch National Opera for the double bill Trouble in Tahiti/Clemency, as part of their Opera Forward Festival.

Ted Huffman studied at Yale University and apprenticed at San Francisco’s Merola Opera Program. He has taught acting and directed young artist productions for Yale Opera, Juilliard Opera, the Canadian Opera Company Studio, Pittsburgh Opera, Merola Opera and Santa Fe Opera.
