AtG in Banff, 2015April 23, 2015Jenna SimeonovEditorial
This summer at the beautiful Banff Centre, Against the Grain Theatre and the Canadian Opera Company collaborate for the second consecutive year, with Open Space: Opera in the 21st Century. This year, they'll put up two shows, one of which is A Little Too Cozy. The third in his transladaptations of the Mozart/Da Ponte operas (Figaro's Wedding, #UncleJohn), AtG Artistic Director Joel Ivany writes an original libretto to Mozart's Così fan tutte.
We're excited to announce the cast of A Little Too Cozy. Get to know everyone, and catch a few insider details in the videos below!
Jenna is the editor and co-creator of Schmopera.com. She's also a pianist, vocal coach, and répétiteur, and working with singers is how she fell in love with opera. Her favourite operas include Peter Grimes, Ariadne auf Naxos, Tristan und Isolde, Written on Skin, and Anna Nicole.
Meet the cast!
Against the Grain Theatre: Banff-bound in 2016
Open Space is noticeably forward-thinking in its approach to training young artists. 13 young singers, 1 assistant director, and 1 assistant répétiteur will be selected for 5 weeks of music and staging rehearsals, lessons, coachings, and performance opportunities within the Banff community. "The focus of Open Space is to impart the skills of tomorrow to the young opera professionals of today."Read More
#UncleJohn takes Ottawa
Also heading to Canada's capital are the Cecilia String Quartet led by Music Director Miloš Repický. I was lucky enough to help out on the music end for a short while, a bizarre-in-a-great-way reunion of people and ideas. It's an impressive thing to watch such a strong cast reconvene; there's efficient work in a show-specific shorthand, but there are still questions about the space, the audience, the dialogue, all in the name of keeping #UncleJohn fresh.Read More
Banff Diaries: a postlude
Opening night brought audiences into a seedy bar, with intimidating bouncers, walls covered in sex toys and a floor littered with latex. Novelty aside, the team delivered in quality with two...arousing?...performances.Read More
Music as Theatre: a chamber concert in Banff
This week at The Banff Centre, the artists of Open Space: Opera in the 21st Century collaborated with the Master Class for Strings and Winds Program for an evening of chamber music at the Rolston Recital Hall. It sounds like your average chamber concert, but I promise you, it wasn't.Read More
Despina in Banff
As the half way point of my time at The Banff Centre is coming up quickly, it seems like a great time to reflect on what it has been like staying in Banff and working on A Little Too Cozy.Read More
Così fan tutte: misogynist, or just unreasonable?
The other day I was fortunate to hear Graham Forst speak about Così fan tutte. If Graham's last name sounds familiar, it's because his wife is the formidable mezzo-soprano Judith Forst; they're both gracing The Banff Centre with their presences, she to teach, and he to get our minds a-spinning.Read More
What's my line?
I asked the casts of A Little Too Cozy and Crush to send me their favourite lines from their respective librettos. Read on, and get curious about these shows. Bonus points if you can identify which bits are Ivany, and which are Chatterton.Read More
A quick hike in Banff, or testing opera singers' lungs
Week 1 of Open Space: Opera in the 21st Century at the Banff Centre has finished. The opera team took advantage of a day away from the rehearsal room, taking a morning hike up Tunnel Mountain. Special thanks goes to Bruno Roy, for wearing a camera the whole time!Watch Video
Opera Karaoke Night, 2015
The singers of The Banff Centre's Open Space: Opera in the 21st Century ventured down to the Royal Canadian Legion for this summer's first instalment of Opera Karaoke Night. We rolled an upright piano into the spotlight, and spent a happy evening singing hits like "Largo al factotum" and "Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß," mixed in with songs from Carousel, The Last Five Years, and even some Freddie Mercury.Read More
Banff Diaries: Day 0
It happened; I got on a plane (and then a bus) and landed in Banff. There was the usual mid-flight panic about whether or not my running shoes were actually in my suitcase (they were) and oh god did I forget my phone charger???Read More
A summer surprise
On this beautiful Saturday morning, we've got exciting news to announce! For four weeks starting Monday, I'll be writing from the beautiful Banff Centre, where I'll be joining Against the Grain Theatre and the Canadian Opera Company at Open Space: Opera in the 21st Century. I'll be there to music direct the workshop production of James Rolfe's new opera, Crush, which is a completely cool take (homage?) on the Don Juan story and Mozart's Don Giovanni.Read More
